About Play City
YouthNoise and Nike have come together to create Play City, a campaign that is giving a whole new meaning to the phrase "Be a good sport." We believe sports have the power to energize individuals, revitalize communities and catalyze change in the world. Whether you play basketball to stay happy and healthy, run marathons to benefit local charities or teach soccer to young women in Uganda, we want you to join the movement to use sports for social good. Trina Chiasson, Lead Blogger, Chicago ![]()
trinachi
Trina currently resides in a pirate-themed house in Chicago (aaarrrgh!) with her four wonderful roommates. She has explored the world of outdoor sports through snowboarding and skiing, white-water kayaking, skydiving, rock and ice climbing, backpacking, and biking. A few years ago, Trina plunged into the social and environmental aspects of the bicycle. She has hosted women's bike maintenance workshops, volunteered as a mechanic on sustainable bicycle tours in Hawai'i, and once pedaled across the United States to raise money for the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Trina also holds degrees in Economics and Women's Studies. She spends her non-blogging time cooking food with friends, juggling in the park, playing piano, and riding her bike around the city.
Ethan Austin, Chicago Blogger ![]()
EthanA
Ethan is the co-founder (and mascot) of GiveForward.org, a website that helps young people raise money online for the causes and non-profits they care about. After growing up in sunny Southern California, Ethan decided to venture out to Emory University in Atlanta for college and hasn't really returned since. He caught the travel bug in college and nearly moved down to Bocas del Toro, Panama upon graduation to start the "world famous" Mondo Taitu Backpacker's hostel with two of his college buddies. A last minute decision, however, sent Ethan to law school at American University in D.C. where he interned at the Natural Resources Defense Council and helped keep our oceans and rivers free from pollution. Now, Ethan resides in Chicago and loves every second of it. When he's not working at GiveForward or Play City, Ethan, a self proclaimed burrito connoisseur, can likely be found playing flag football in the snow, scouring the aisles of Trader Joe's for chicken gyoza potstickers, training for marathons in his banana costume or wandering around the city in search of any McDonald's still serving the McRib Sandwich (he has yet to find one). If you want to say hi to Ethan, he's @ethanaustin on Twitter.
Oakley Anderson-Moore, Los Angeles Blogger ![]()
OakleyAM
December 24, 1983 was a special day for the state of Washington: the WA Seahawks won their first playoff game in history, Chris Cross released that great song 'Think of Laura,' and Ma and Pa Anderson-Moore took the heater out from under the station wagon so a big, fat 9-lb. baby Oakley could get born in Kittitas County Hospital! Although her roots were rural, Oakley moved to Sao Paulo, Brazil (city of 20 million!) and soon learned the concept of "sport-for-good" on a personal level. She spent the next six years living in different countries knowing that if she didn't understand a lick of the language, could always count on a soccer ball for common ground. Absorbing different cultures, living conditions, and environmental wonders formulated Oakley's passion for social and political causes, and decided she needed to join the good guys to help affect positive change. Oakley believes profoundly in her generation's capacity for smart, effective, and peaceful solutions, and thinks YouthNoise is a great example. On a clear day, Oakley can almost see the Hollywood sign through her bedroom window. If she's not escaping LA traffic to go rock climbing, or scouring the city for good pupusa joints, she can probably be found combing the internet and writing at any given LA cafe.
Nando Yiv, Los Angeles Blogger ![]()
nansteez1984
Nando Yiv resides in Norwalk, CA about 15 minutes away from downtown Los Angeles. He first fell in love with sports when he started watching the "Showtime" Lakers games with his dad. His mom would tell him that he almost didn't have a dad because of Larry Bird. For fear of their only son being too small or getting hurt, his parents never allowed him to partcipate in organized sports. That all changed in 7th grade, when Nando got his first skateboard. Twelve years later, he is still skating around LA County and all of its surrounding areas, filming his friends and finding new spots to spends hours at. After working for a voter registration drive for two years, he realized that he was able to make a difference in the simplest ways. By engaging people and getting them to think about the world around them and how they can affect it, he found that he can start the first step to making the world a better place. He continues to do that by being involved with the youth at Norwalk skatepark. Besides seeing him at the park, you can probably find him on the internet keeping track of the Lakers and Dodgers or learning how to play bad covers of Smiths songs in front of his computer.
Debbie Attias, Miami Blogger ![]()
DebbieD
Debbie Attias was raised in Miami, Florida and moved to New York when she was 17 to study photography at NYU. After college, she started a crazy girl band and sang and danced her way around the world. The band recently broke up, and she decided to ride her bicycle from LA to NY to raise money for the WWF. Now she is back in her hometown of Miami taking photos, blogging for YN, teaching free community dancercize classes, making music and volunteering with environmental education.
Tara Conley, Los Angeles Blogger ![]()
TaraLConley
Tara holds a BA in English from the University of Houston and is currently an MA candidate in Women's Studies at Texas Woman's University. She grew up playing street ball and collecting Cleveland Cavaliers basketball playing cards. She was a state long jump champion in high school, as well as an All-American high school athlete. Playing sports in school paid off quite handsomely because later she was awarded a track and field scholarship to the University of Houston. Fast-forward a few years later and she's now focused on tackling an array of social justice issues by speaking out, organizing within various communities, and utilizing the written word to inspire action. Besides writing, she also sings, sketches, and produces mini video documentaries about Hurricane Katrina and the Jena Six controversy. As a Houston volunteer during Hurricane Katrina, she witnessed first-hand the atrocities many American citizens encountered at the hands of a failed government institution. She's ecstatic about the 2008 Presidential campaign (especially being a former campaign organizer during this year's primary season); however, she's most interested in the people's influence to bring about change, not necessarily a politician's platform. Her quest in life is to change the world so poets, singers, painters, and dreamers are just as economically and politically valued in this society as athletes and shady politicians. A woman can dream.
James Hodges, New York Blogger ![]()
jameshodges
James Hodges was born and raised on the infamous Jersey Shore, where he learned to love swimming and beaches from a young age. Being from an area where the beaches are known for their less attractive qualities has made him keenly aware of how import environmental consciousness is in protecting our natural habitats. Now he lives in Brooklyn, spending as much time as he can connecting with the thriving local community of politically and physically active people making positive changes. You might see him skateboarding under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway or swimming at Brighton Beach. If you do, go say "hi" and make a new friend.

YouthNoise Campaign Staff
Angie Bush | San Francisco, CA ![]()
Director of Strategic Partnerships
Angie was born and raised in the great state of Idaho but always realized her dreams and ambitions would take her elsewhere. After attending the University of Colorado at Boulder and living overseas, Angie went on to co-found a nationally touring production company and work with a number of women's rights organizations throughout the country. She came to the Bay Area two years ago to earn a Master of Public Administration and continue to explore her interests in creating lasting social movements. Since moving to California, she has worked on a major political campaign, produced a number of plays and festivals and developed an acute addiction to California cuisine. She enjoys finding new hiking trails around the Bay area, writing, laughing until your belly hurts and taking advantage of everything San Francisco's big city life has to offer.
Gillian Burgess | Kailua, HI ![]()
Web Producer
Gillian is part Californian, part New Orleanian and part nomad, which means she hugs trees and people liberally, dresses in costume whenever possible and can't sit still for more than a few minutes at a time. She has a borderline unhealthy obsession with full-contact sports and has a history of playing rugby and tackle football (with roller derby and water polo next on her to-do list). She strongly believes being active is good for individuals and communities, and she loves finding untraditional ways to be sporty. Gillian grew up in Sonoma, CA before trekking way down south to New Orleans for college. She earned her BA in Communications and French from Loyola University New Orleans and spent her undergrad years photographing protests and parades and getting a crash course in Southern politics, cuisine and accents. After graduation, Gillian spent six months teaching English to elementary school kids in Istres, France before keeping U-Haul in business by moving from New Orleans to San Francisco to San Diego, back to New Orleans and recently to Kailua, Hawaii. In her spare time, she likes swimming, dancing, cooking and planning her next adventure.
